06 Aug Authentic (and Imperfect!)
– Being vulnerable is giving up the need to hide –
Do we understand what vulnerability really is? For most of us, we simply don’t want to be told we’re wrong. We don’t want to be embarrassed. We don’t want to appear weak. And we don’t want to be humiliated. We simply avoid being vulnerable. We hide.
The truth is, being vulnerable simply means we’re making a choice. We’re choosing not to hide our true feelings from others. We’re willing to be authentic and imperfect.
What I like most about this concept of being vulnerable is our unwillingness to hide … our unwillingness to push people away … that we become courageous enough to choose not to hide our true feelings from others … even if we can’t quite grasp what those true feelings are yet. There’s nothing wrong with simply saying, “I’m not sure what my true feelings are in this moment.”
Being vulnerable often churns up those fears of being hurt and rejected … of experiencing loss or somehow losing. We have a substantial fear of loss, or of losing something that’s important to us. And so we have difficulty being vulnerable because we want to protect ourselves. The trouble is, in protecting ourselves, and hiding, we often lose the very thing we didn’t want to lose in the first place!
I hope today’s episode inspires you to look more closely at the power of being vulnerable.
This episode is for you if you wonder …
